Patriotic Shirts

Every year we travel to Maryland to celebrate the Fourth of July with my husband's family. Positioned so close to the Nation's capital, the state can definitely throw a patriotic party.  One year I had my daughter Julia, aged 3 at the time, make t-shirts for everyone to wear to the local parade. I shopped the typical chain stores to find a white shirt for each family member. For just a few extra dollars it is worth the money to find a fitted shirt than to use a plain undershirt. I cut stars and letters out of compressed sponge sheets, poured some fabric paint on some paper plates, and let her go to town. This project can get messy, so adult supervision is recommended. She needed help lining up the letters and making the fireworks, but otherwise this was well within her skill level.

This design was made by painting on my daughter's hand and using it as a stamp. The palm makes the blue portion of the flag, the fingers are the stripes. Have the child spread their fingers when stamping so there is good separation between the red and white stripes.

Claire's shirt was made by first stamping a blue star in the center of the shirt. Next the letters "U" "S" "A" were stamped in red fabric paint, with the "S" stamped on top of the blue star
